How Does IUI Happens

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment procedure that involves placing sperm directly into a woman's uterus to increase the likelihood of fertilization.

Here's how the IUI process typically unfolds:

  • Initial Consultation : - The process begins with an initial consultation with a fertility specialist or reproductive endocrinologist. During this consultation, the medical history of the individual or couple is reviewed, and any necessary tests or evaluations are conducted to determine the cause of infertility and the suitability of IUI as a treatment option.
  • Ovarian Stimulation : - Depending on the specific circumstances, the woman may undergo ovarian stimulation using fertility medications such as clomiphene citrate (Clomid) or injectable gonadotropins. Ovarian stimulation aims to encourage the development of multiple follicles containing eggs, increasing the chances of successful fertilization. Not all IUI cycles involve ovarian stimulation.
  • Monitoring : - Throughout the menstrual cycle, the woman undergoes regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds to track the development of follicles in the ovaries. Monitoring helps determine the optimal timing for the insemination procedure.
  • Insemination Procedure : - Once the sperm sample is prepared, the insemination procedure takes place. The woman lies on an examination table similar to a pelvic exam. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix. A thin, flexible catheter containing the prepared sperm is then inserted through the cervix and into the uterus. The sperm is deposited directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix and increasing the chances of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes to fertilize the egg.
  • Post-Insemination Care : - After the insemination procedure, the woman may be advised to rest for a short period before resuming normal activities. There are usually no restrictions on daily activities following IUI.
  • Wait for Pregnancy : - Following the IUI procedure, the woman waits for about 10-14 days before taking a pregnancy test to determine if conception has occurred. If the pregnancy test is positive, further monitoring will be scheduled to confirm the viability of the pregnancy.
