Total Laproscopic Hysterectomy

Total Laproscopic Hysterectomy

A total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the uterus (hysterectomy) with the assistance of laparoscopic instruments and a laparoscope, which is a thin, lighted tube with a camera. Unlike traditional open hysterectomy, which requires a large abdominal incision, TLH is performed through several small incisions in the abdomen.

Here's an overview of the procedure

  • Preparation : - Before the surgery, the patient will undergo preoperative evaluation, which may include blood tests, imaging studies, and other assessments to ensure that they are suitable candidates for TLH.
  • Anesthesia : - TLH is performed under general anesthesia, meaning the patient is unconscious and unable to feel pain during the procedure.
  • Incisions : - The surgeon makes several small incisions (usually 0.5 to 1 centimeter in length) in the abdomen, through which specialized surgical instruments and the laparoscope are inserted.
  • Visualization : - The laparoscope provides a magnified, high-definition view of the pelvic organs, allowing the surgeon to visualize the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and surrounding structures with clarity.
  • Uterine Dissection : - Using laparoscopic instruments, the surgeon carefully dissects and separates the uterus from the surrounding tissues, including the ligaments and blood vessels that attach it to the pelvic wall.
  • Removal of the Uterus : - Once the uterus is fully dissected, it is removed through one of the small incisions, typically by cutting it into smaller pieces (morcellation) or using a specialized tissue retrieval system.
  • Closure : - The surgeon closes any incisions made in the abdominal wall using sutures or surgical glue. Occasionally, a small drainage tube may be placed to remove any excess fluid or blood from the surgical site.
  • Recovery : - After the procedure, the patient is monitored closely in the recovery area until they wake up from anesthesia. Most patients are able to go home on the same day or within 24 hours after TLH.

TLH offers several advantages over traditional open hysterectomy, including :

  • Smaller Incisions : - TLH involves smaller incisions compared to open surgery, resulting in less postoperative pain, reduced risk of infection, and faster recovery times.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay : - Most patients undergoing TLH can be discharged from the hospital within 24 hours after surgery, compared to several days of hospitalization required for open hysterectomy.
  • Quicker Recovery : - TLH allows for faster recovery and return to normal activities, including work and daily chores, typically within 2-6 weeks after surgery.
  • Reduced Risk of Complications : - Minimally invasive techniques used in TLH are associated with lower rates of complications such as wound infection, blood loss, and postoperative adhesions compared to open surgery.
